Designing, developing and delivering qualifications and competency training for the Association of Building Compliance

The Association of Building Compliance (ABC), New Zealand’s peak body for building compliance professionals, identified a growing need to ensure its members, and the wider industry, had access to high-quality, targeted training that met both regulatory requirements and practical workplace needs. With increasing complexity in legislation and the demand for proven competency, ABC required a trusted education partner to help raise industry standards.

ABC engaged us, through our tertiary education arm FutureSkills, to design, develop, and deliver nationally recognised qualifications tailored to the building compliance sector. This collaboration led to the successful delivery of two key programmes:

· Certificate in Building Compliance (Level 4)

· New Zealand Diploma in Engineering – Fire Engineering Strand

Developed in close consultation with industry experts, these qualifications equip learners with the technical knowledge, legislative understanding, and practical skills required to perform effectively in compliance roles. The flexible in-employment delivery model allows professionals to continue working while gaining formal qualifications, enabling immediate application of new skills in the workplace.

In addition to delivering qualifications, ABC also engaged us to develop a comprehensive competency framework for the building compliance profession. This framework establishes clear standards of knowledge, skills, and behaviours required for different roles, creating a consistent benchmark for assessing capability across the sector. It not only supports professional development but also provides employers with a robust tool for workforce planning and performance management.

Through this partnership, ABC has strengthened the professionalism and capability of its members, setting a new benchmark for building compliance in New Zealand. Together, we have delivered solutions that improve workforce competence, enhance public safety, and ensure the sector is well-prepared for the future.
